Short Handed Sit n Go Strategies That Will Increase Your Winnings
The
reason I love short
handed sit n go, no limit poker games is three-fold. First,
they are fast moving and an aggressive style of play. Second, they
only take about forty-five minutes to play. Third, in my opinion
they are the easiest games to win at, by far.
If
you want to master the short-handed sit-n-go there are a few strategies
that will help you win a lot more often than you are now. Let’s
go over three short handed sng strategies.
Start
Slowly
Unless
you have a monster try staying out of the majority of hands in the
beginning. Wait for at least one to two players to be put out. This
will allow you to appear as a passive or tight player. And in a
game full of aggressive players this is what you want. Because when
it is time to get aggressive, later in the game, you’ll have
the upper hand.
Never
Limp-In
While
mixing your game up is important in more traditional poker games
you don’t need it as much at the beginning of a short-handed
game. I used to mix it up a lot in my earlier days but I’ve
experienced more success either raising or folding. Rarely do I
achieve success when I limp-in in a short handed game. Now I choose
my starting hands
very carefully.
Typically
I raise every three to five hands. Whether I’m in the blinds
or not. Try raising with monsters, big pairs and A-K, A-Q. You may
also try raising with any pocket pair and suited connectors 6-7
or higher. This has proven very successful for me.
Do
your best to avoid hands like A-J or A-T. And definitely stay away
from Ace – rag. I know a lot of players go for the low ended
straight in a short-handed game but in my experience it pays off
less than 15%. Not good odds
when there’s an easier way.
When
to Play Aggressive
Once
you get a feel for the table and at least one or two people have
been eliminated its time to increase your aggressiveness. Your stack
should be in good enough shape and the blinds will still be low
enough that you can begin your attack.
Now
you don’t want to be aggressive just to be aggressive. However,
when you are dealt the same hands you were at the beginning you
need to increase your aggression and begin to push around the other
players. Increase the amount of your raises. Since you were playing
tight earlier your opponents won’t have a good read on you.
Finally,
you can begin to play a little looser with your pre-flop play as
people continue to get eliminated. However, you don’t want
to get too silly. There’s nothing worse than getting eliminated
from a winnable sit n go game because you got too aggressive with
a weak hand. But if you follow these three sit
n go strategies, test them and change them for your style of
play I’m confident you’ll have great success.
